Epsom Lawn Tennis Club

Epsom has been famous as a spa town, for racing, the suffragette movement and Emily Davidson, and now it is building a considerable reputation in UK Padel since 2019.

Epsom Padel at the Epsom Lawn Tennis club is the premiere padel club in Surrey, and don’t let anyone tell you it is not, even the wonderful Oxshott Padel, or Esher Tennis club aren’t doing social Padel as well as the Epsom folks from what we have seen.  The tricky part is getting in there as the membership is tightly managed to ensure enough capacity on their 3 Italian padel courts, so off peak is the initial option.

Epsom took the progressive step of taking out a grass court to facilitate the build of the second and third courts in early 2022, and not only has it paid off for members and their guests, it is now the host of the renowned Padel School and running major LTA Padel events with style and confidence . You also see a steady stream of some of the best players in the UK on the courts, with Sandy Farquharson the performance director for GB Padel coaching from there. Do they add much to the club? We have to be completely honest that no one in the UK knows how to play padel yet so they absolutely do, and just a couple of minutes watching Sandy and co is an inspiration, if only he had the idea to capture it on film……..

The beating heart of this place is the terrific committee led by chairman Mark Ayres who is regularly seen cooking burgers and serving drinks at the Padel shack, as he masterminds regular 32 player events, quite often on Friday evenings. Yes 32, and sold out in minutes, we’ve seen the whatsapp chains as we are lucky enough to be members there.

On a Friday evening you don’t know quite what you are going to get, be it a game with the architect who planned the layout of the courts, one of the Padel School team taking you on, or the former racing driver who has now hung up his squash racket.  Find a member and be their guest, it’s a must play club particularly when they have an event on as they know how to have a good time.

Who or what is a Bandeja? I hear you ask… Bandeja is the Spanish translation for the word ‘tray’.  I know confusing, right? Well, actually it’s not, you see in Padel terms Bandeja means a sliced volley. In Padel, a player's aim is to keep their opponent at the back of...
