Golden Point. What are the origins of this ‘punto de oro’
The golden point, sounds very majestic, doesn’t it?
Well, there’s good reason for that, introduced by the World Padel Tour in 2020 The Gold Point is a new rule that’s recognized as one of the alternative scoring methods in Padel.
The rule was introduced in order to bring more excitement to the game, as instead of playing the advantage rule where a team must win two consecutive points, players are only required to play one point to win the game.Â
With no second chances for redemption, this rule makes the game far more intense.Â
How it works
The decisive gold point is also referred to as El Punto de Oro in Spanish.Â
It’s played when the game’s score has reached a deuce (40-40), or both teams have earned three points each of a game.
The receiving pair will decide if they receive the service on the left side or right side of the court. But they aren’t allowed to change position to receive the golden point.Â
It must also be noted that in mixed doubles, players are not allowed to serve to players of the opposite sex to rule out the possibility of a team gaining an unfair advantage.
The rule was first implemented in the Cervezas Victoria Marbella Master in February 2020.Â
Padel is constantly evolving as a sport with the dynamic and intense nature of the game being at the forefront of its evolution.
The Golden Point Rule has been revolutionary in the world of Padel with many believing it to be one of the most significant changes in regulations registered for professional Padel following the out-of-court play.
