Surbiton Racket & Fitness Club

Surbiton Racket & Fitness Club introduced Padel in November 2021, set amongst a sanctuary of stunning lawn tennis courts. Surbiton is in London and has a great deal of opportunity from the new courts as by our map reading the next stop for padel is the Hurlingham club in Putney. On the August day that we came for a game they still had the lawn tennis courts laid out in competition mode, with branding, umpire chairs and the whiff of something you can’t get in many clubs, probably grass!

After being introduced to the management and the coaching team in a wonderful welcome we took a 5 minute walk to the furthest point away from the clubhouse, and found the Padel courts in glorious asphalt red colour. Obviously Surbiton have used, or re-used dead space well and over time they are talking of introducing a Padel shack to keep the social padel players refreshed at that end of the club, a little like a halfway house at an out and back golf course.

This is the real deal in terms of a rackets club, excellently run for all ages, a variety of sessions for all to join and some elite tennis and squash to be a part of; Surbiton are currently squash and racketball county champions. Will be great to see the two sections meet on the padel courts here, as if Padel can thrive here it could be a good indication of the potential growth of the game in the UK. If they can find the time to school themselves in the art of the T20 of Tennis, then Padel’s future in this charming spot in Surbiton will be secured.
